Best Weighing Capacity

Here’s a quick mental exercise for you. Go to Amazon and search for kitchen scales and keep noting the maximum weighing capacity offered by those scales.

While you can do it on your own, let us tell you that most of the good scales have a standard maximum weighing capacity of 176 ounces, then there come the poor ones that weigh around 70.54 and then there come scales like MyWeigh and Ozeri.

MyWeigh scales weigh as much as 282.1917 ounces which is simply unparalleled, but Ozeri scale also does a good job with offering maximum weighing capacity capped at 179.84 ounces, which gives it a little edge over standard 176 ounces scales.

5 Measuring Units

While it is simply astounding why almost all scales offer measuring units other than Kg and to make things worse, Ozeri food scale also does not allow measuring items in Kg and you have to use a unit converter app for this, the good thing is that this scale offers 5 measuring units.

It is good because most of other scales that we have previously reviewed only offer 4 measuring units, and some of them stoop to 3 units.

Well:

Not in the case of Ozeri ZK14-S! This weight measuring scale lets you measure weight of your ingredients in five different units. You can do this in grams, lbs, lbs:oz, oz and ml, and with a little unit converter app in your cell phone, you can easily measure in Kilos too.

Graduation Unit

Graduation unit is the least measurable point beyond which a scale cannot give accurate measurement. This is important because sometimes you try a recipe that demands a very little amount of some ingredient e.g. sprinkling ground black pepper.

The good thing about Ozeri kitchen scale is that its graduation unit is 0.05 Oz. This is way better than standard 0.1 Oz offered by other weighing scales. It means that you can enjoy the measuring the weight of the smallest quantity that any food scale can measure. Bakers love Ozeri food scale for this reason.

Tare Option

And yes, for 97.5 out of 100 times, the readings turned out to be 100% accurate. This is not what you are going to witness in just any food scale; Ozeri’s Amazon customers also love it for this very reason.

Unit Converter

While using other food scales on Amazon, at least in case of most of them, the transition from one to another measuring unit is never a smooth experience, this is not yet the case with top class kitchen scales like Ozeri ZK14-S and Etekcity etc.

Some of these negative points are actually intentional decisions taken by the company to save the product from a bigger negative impact, some of them are noticed by Amazon buyers (not us) and some of them are what we noticed in our exhaustive testing of this product.

We are going to talk about all of them in detail. Here you go:

Short Turn-off time for Inactivity

Since most of these digital scales use AAA batteries (thankfull Ozeri takes only 2 to work), they have to do something to avoid the battery drain issue. They do with setting a turn-off time. After a certain short period of inactivity, the scales goes off.

Unfortunately, most of the customers are not happy with this trick, and most of highly rated scales get a negative review because of this. Ozeri is no exception; its inactivity turn-off window is only two minutes, and considering how busy a chef is at home or business place kitchen, they don’t have enough time to scratch their head, much less to keep going to the scale, in the midst of cooking, just to keep it active.

Tare Button’s Inconsistent Readings

Well, this con is neither intentional on company’s part nor noticed during our testing, and we just included it because a handful of customers complained that tare button is not very consistent in its readings. It will give you different amount for the same weight; perhaps it is because of the allocation of sensors, but this issue seems to be real as far as Amazon reviews of this scale are concerned.

Malfunctioning

This is another con that we could not attest by our testing, but when it comes to the pros and cons of a product, the consumers and end users have the most authentic opinion. If you have a look at Amazon reviews of this kitchen scale, you will find out that there is a considerable number of people who reported that their scale stopped working after a few weeks or months etc.

However, majority reviews are the reason why Ozeri scale has an overall 4.8 star rating and those who gave those positive reviews definitely did not notice anything like this. When it comes to a scale turning dead, there are a lot of things to consider and including its inner circuit, the fittings at one’s kitchen could also be the reason for it.

Clumsy Built

This one is what we would like to attest because of our personal experience and testing of this product. We would like to inform any interested users that while Ozeri’s built quality is not poor and it does not interfere with its functioning, it is not chrome or metal. It is purely built of plastic with chrome finish on it.

This is the reason why scale is so light weight and this is the reason why some Amazon customers disliked the scale, even though clumsy, plastic body made it lightweight and small to pack and move, and even though it does not affect the proper functioning of the scale.

No USB/Adapter Charging

Well, even Ozeri rival Etekcity does not have this feature and so is the case with rest of famous food scales. However, a USB/Adapter charging food scale is not a fantasy and scales like MyWeigh offer this function that makes it easy for you to just use electricity to charge your scale and you don’t have to rush to your drawers or to market to buy new batteries, while you are in mid of baking.

Ozeri comes with 2 AAA batteries, which makes it better than those that require 3, but ignoring the USB/AC Adapter charging option seems to be a bad executive decision.

No Back-lit Display

Well, this is the reason why Ozeri ZK14-S food scale requires only two batteries. At least this is what we can make of it; they made a wonderful scale and then made a blunder by not making a back-list display.

With a back-lit display, problems like poor lighting and shadow of the weighing trey, bowl or container simply vanish, but not in the case where you try to save the battery life by compromising over functionality and ease.
