When it comes to food scales: digital or analog ones, there are only a few of them that seem to be acing the art of good looks, awesome design, efficiency and efficacy. Eketcity digital kitchen scale with backlit display and appealing stainless steel body seems to be one of those food scales that can hardly be ignored at sight.
We reviewed a bunch of kitchen scales available on Amazon a few months ago and we devised a very strict rating criteria for that. Etekcity was one of the few food scales that scored more than 7 on a scale of 1 to 10.
In this detailed review we are going to figure out as to why Etekcity scored so high, why this food scale has more than 7000 reviews over Amazon, and what are the areas where this digital scale lacks.
However:
Here are the pros and cons that you must have a look at. These pros and cons are not only based on customer reviews, but also on our extensive lab testing. It is via that testing that we devised a testing criteria and we came to know how well Etekcity digital scale delivers on all standards.

Without further ado, let us discuss each and every merit and demerit of Etekcity kitchen scale and then we will have a look at how well it performed on our scale.
Etekcity Food Scale Pros in Detail
Weighing Platform
Etekcity weighing scale’s platform is something special because it is wide and flat, and unlike those scales that perform well but lose their ranking because of poorly designed weighing platform, this scale has a platform that serves really well.
You can place your items on the platform or use a weighing bowl and without obstructing your view of digital scale, you can weigh your ingredients.
4 High Precision Sensors
To a layman, a kitchen weighing scale should work perfectly doesn’t matter whether they place their items in any of the corners or in mid of weighing platform. However, this is not how food scales work and this is the reason why many scales would give you different digits for the same amount of ingredient.
Not in case of Etekcity digital food scale! Etekcity has 4 high precision sensors in 4 corners of its scale and thus wherever you place your items, Etekcity baking scale will give you 100% accurate weight readings.
Backlit Display
There are digital scales without backlit display and then there are analog scales with zilch digits and backlight, and then there come a few weighing scales like AccuWeight and Etekcity etc. that have a backlit display.
Some would say that it is not needed at all, but it is a good feature in case where you use your food weighing scale in poorly-lit room or where the shadow of weighing bowl makes it hard to read the weight.
Body
First of all, Etekcity kitchen scale’s body is made of brushed stainless steel so it is not going anywhere. Not only it looks very good and pretty, it is also very sturdy and durable, so until or unless the machine breaks, you are not going to throw this weighing scale away.
Yet:
Brushed stainless steel looks and durability is not all that Etekcity digital scale has to offer. Unlike most of other food scales on Amazon, Etekcity is a very lightweight food scale: thanks to its sleek and stylish design.
It weighs only 7.2 ounces and this makes it the least heavy scale that we have come across so far and only Greater Goods Nourish beats its weight with a crazy weight of only 1.28 ounces.
Tare Function
Well:
This is not something new and most, if not all, food scales have this function with which a user can change the display reading to zero, in order to weigh the same ingredients again or to add more ingredients.
However:
We have not seen many food scales that have this good tare precision and Ektecity food weighing scale does this without any flaw.
Graduation
Graduation units are the units in which one may scale the weights of certain items. This is the least possible point of weight and it shows the smallest quantity that a weighing scale may measure.
In case of Etekcity digital weighing scale, the graduation unit is 0.01 ounce. While there are weighing scales that do not deliver better than 0.1 or o.03 ounces etc., it is a sigh of relief to have Etekcity scale that weighs minimum 0.01 ounce and gives you weighing measurements with 100% precision.
Weighing Capacity
Apart from graduation units, there are certain other aspects of this scale’s weighing capacity that must get readers’ attention.
For example, this scale’s maximum weighing capacity is 176 ounces. This is definitely not the highest in all available scales and we have Ozeri ZK 14-S and MyWeigh that respectively have 179.84 and 282.1917 ounces weighing capacity, but most of the scales have 176 ounces weighing limit and it is considered more than adequate.
Also:
This scale lets the customers measure their ingredients as per 4 different measuring units: oz, ml, lb and gram. While it is satisfactory that you have not less than 4 measuring units to measure your ingredients, it would have been better if they allowed customers to weigh items in kilos as well.
There is no doubt that while you’re cooking, it happens very rarely that you use something as heavy as a kilogram, there are certain items e.g. meat and milk etc. that you have to add more than a kilogram.
With Etekcity scale, you cannot weight it in KGs, but what you can do is use a converter app and convert your measurements into KGs.
Low Battery Indicator
You’ll agree:
The digital scales, especially those that have a backlit scale, have a battery problem. Their batteries drain out faster than you expect. While unfortunately, Etekcity has not done anything to avoid batteries or even reduce the battery consumption, they did one smart thing.
They have added a low battery indicator to their scale and whenever your batteries are about to finish, this little indicator lets you know so that you may get new batteries before it is too late.
Easy to Clean
There is this constant issues with glass or plastic finish scales; if weigh a liquid or you get a stain by any other ingredient, they are hard to wipe clean. It is because of the material. Thanks to Etekcity scale’s stainless steel body, you can use a damp piece of cloth and wipe the platform clean anytime with just one move.
1 Year Warranty
Since Etekcity’s weighing scale is one of the best-selling weighing scales over the internet as well as on Amazon, they are fully confident in their product and thus they offer a 1 year warranty as well as lifetime support by their customer support team.
Etekcity Digital Scale Cons in Detail
So:
You’re reading these points and I bet that you’re thinking “Good heavens, why I haven’t tried this scale till yet?” Well, everything is not kosher with Etekcity food scales, and although they are near perfect, they have their own shortcomings.
Let us have a look at the points that explain the cons of Etekcity kitchen scales.
Fast Draining Batteries – No AC Adapter
Well:
Technically speaking, these are two different issues, but since both of them are connected to each other, let us take them together and see why they make Etekcity scale a little less awesome.
First of all, Etekcity includes two AAA batteries but they drain out pretty fast not because there is something wrong with batteries, but because of Etekcity’s internal structure and that back-lit display they go empty pretty sooner than you predict.
This issue, could be resolved with having a USB or AC adapter charging option. We already have that option with one or two scales and Etekcity could join the ranks of those scales, but we fail to see why they missed out on chargeable scale option.
Display Shut-off time
Etekcity, like a few top class kitchen scales, introduced a back-lit display that eliminates the chance of taking wrong measurements because of shadow or poor light in the room.
However:
That display is the reason why Etekcity consumes batteries faster than those scales that do not have a back-lit display. To counter this problem, they decided that the display had to have a quick shut-off time and thus, by doing it, they added another point to the cons of this scale.
Many customers have complained of it and we have observed the same in lab testing that this scale gives up on your in the mid of action. So you’re busy cooking and you are adding ingredients to scale and you are removing them from the scale and in the mid of action the screen turns blank, while you have no idea as to measurements and ingredients to be added or removed.
Measurements not available in Kg
Think of roasting a big lamb leg or turkey or something similar to this. Now the recipe that you follow demands you to add or remove ingredients proportionate to the weight of meat. You are sure that leg or turkey is heavier than a Kg, but Etekcity would not allow you to see measurement in kilo and you weigh the meat in pounds and then use an app to convert them into Kg. Is it an embarrassment or not? It is and if you buy Etekcity, either use ingredients less heavier than a kilo or always have a converter app ready to help you with measurements.
Tare Time
Some customers have complained of this and we have observed the same when we tested this food weighing scale that it takes time to tare. The tare button, once pressed, takes roughly 8 to 10 seconds to tare and that feels annoying while you are in a hurry, guests or customers are waiting for you and you are struggling with your newly bought Etekcity scale.
Scales tend to break
Well:
We would like to be clear about this point. This does not come from our personal experience and since 1 year warranty is there to cover any problem we do not think that this is a fact, but perhaps some customers turned out to be unlucky with Etekcity kitchen scales because they complained of their scales breaking after a few weeks use.
Again, in our extensive testing, we did not notice any problem with the functioning of this scale, and even if your scale turns out to be one with a manufacturing fault, both: Amazon warranty and Etekcity warranty assure that you money will remain safe.

As you can see this scale scores 7.5 with very high marks for usability and design. So, this was out review of Etekcity Digital Kitchen scale with back-lit display; try it and let us know how well it went (or otherwise).
